What kind of work do I do? I’m a semi-retired refugee lawyer. I didn’t fit in to conventional legal work. When I discovered refugee law I knew it was what I wanted to do. I’ve worked with refugees from more than 30 countries. I taught a refugee law course for UBC Downtown for 20 years. In 2025-26 I’ve been working with refugees from Afghanistan, Tibet and Iran.

What do I love to do? Outdoor activities, theatre, songwriting and travel. I enjoy cycling, kayaking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snorkelling & scuba, and hiking. I’ve written, and produced 4 musical theatre plays for the Vancouver Fringe Festival and directed 7 productions at the Fringe. I’ve enjoyed casting and working with young actors, musicians and music directors, often BIPOC or LGBTQ+. In recent years, Kyong-ae and I have travelled to Ecuador, Tasmania, Cornwall and South Africa, and we’re currently planning a trip to Kosovo and the Balkans.

How do I participate? I’ve been twice on the Board, including a term as President, and I’ve also served on the Membership and Inspection Committees. I’m currently on the Green Working group along with Huck Baldwin from the West and, Laura Harvey and Eben Alton from the East. We’re responsible for bicycle parking and electric vehicle (EV/PHEV) charging in the 2 buildings, and we arranged for Telus fibre optic to be available to TR. We obtained a TR EV Ready Plan, subsidized by BC Hydro, and have explored the possibility of having some Level 2 charging stations installed. When our new transformer is installed sometime in 2026, we’ll revisit obtaining Level 2 chargers. We welcome new participants and suggestions for new environment-related projects, such as the installation of rooftop solar panels to reduce our Hydro bills, and a campaign to get the 2010 electric streetcar line back up and running alongside Lamey’s Mill Road.

What are some interesting or fun facts about me? I had never been to an Olympics so when the Winter Games came to Vancouver in 2010 I decided to volunteer. I trained to become a Biathlon Timing Official, received a certification, and ended up working at the Biathlon Finish Line at the Whistler Olympics. I still volunteer as an official, most recently at the BC trials for the Canadian Junior and Youth National Biathlon Teams. I had never written a song until about 15 years ago when they started popping into my head. Since then I’ve written over 40 songs and had 3 make it to the semi-finals of the UK Songwriting Contest.

What’s great about living at TR? The sense of community. I really like knowing my neighbours and their kids, and enjoying the social events, along with being part of the solution to the housing crisis in Canada instead of part of the problem. Governments are only know starting to realize that co-op housing is essential for the future of affordable housing in this country.
